After reading the previous reviews, we ordered the removal tool as well. As another reviewer mentioned, the Kitchen Aid directions on replacing the part don’t mention the tool, most likely because the tool isn’t a Kitchen Aid product. The directions did tell you how to remove the coupler using a flathead screwdriver, though. My husband was able to remove the damaged coupler with a screwdriver fairly easily and didn’t need the tool after all. Overall, it still cost us less than replacing the blender, even though we didn’t need the special tool. The new coupler works fine as does the blender. If we hadn’t spent the unnecessary $ for the tool, this would be a 5-star review. Seller turnaround time was excellent.

Seneca shipped this very fast. I got it immediately. I ordered the removal tool. Do you need it? Maybe, I don’t know. I think it might make it somewhat easier to change than using a screw driver. Here’s the important part though. The directions with the couple are a little vague. When it says, turn 1/4 turn at a time, they mean the screwdriver/tool and not the broken coupler. You are not unscrewing anything even though there are screw threads. Weird, right? Ok, what you are doing is prying up the broken coupler a little at a time. Eventually, it just pops off. It takes a little while for it to come off, so be patient. Just work your way around the post and pry up. The new coupler does screw on however. Also, before you put on the replacement coupler, clean out the metal filings from the post (this is in the directions).
When the coupler first broke I thought I would have to buy a new blender, this was a great solution. I bought a spare coupler and now I’m ready for the next time it goes.

I know Amazon buys from suppliers and they usually sell items for less but in this case I went directly to the suppliers website and got 2 of the couplers
and the tool for the same price. Actually I think the shipping was cheaper and I will get it faster that Amazon shipping.

this little device saved me from shelling out for a new blender. It was easy to use if you follow instructions

On my blender, the worn-out coupler wanted to freely turn in both directions. Therefore, there was absolutely no way that it was coming off without some sort of tool to hold the shaft in place and keep it from turning. The tool that comes with this package is designed to precisely hold the shaft, thereby allowing you to twist off the coupler (I used channel lock pliers on the coupler to assist). The tool worked like a champ!
My only complaint (for which I took off 1 star) is that you end up paying like ten+ dollars for this “tool”, which is little more than a thin piece of metal. Even so, the tool + coupler is still likely cheaper than any repair shop bill. Furthermore, at least now that I have the required tool, I can get the 2 dollar coupler-only deal the next time this coupler wears out.
Bottom line: if you’re having any problems removing your existing coupler (as I did), you definitely need this tool! Purchase it and hold on to it for the next time.
